Many iPhone users get stuck in three places after first installing Potato: verification codes not arriving, notifications not sounding, and chat history not matching after switching devices. This article breaks it down in the actual order of operations, so you can find the section that matches your issue.

1. Pre-login preparation and verification code troubleshooting

First, search for Potato in the App Store and install it. Make sure your system version is not lower than iOS 14. On older models, check remaining storage before upgrading; it is recommended to leave at least 2GB free. After installation, open the app and enter your phone number. Note that the country/region code must match the SIM card's registered location. For example, for a mainland China number, select +86, then enter the 11-digit phone number without spaces or a plus sign.

If the verification code does not arrive, check in this order:

If the account was previously linked to an email or two-factor verification, use email to receive the verification code when logging in; it is more stable than SMS. If you forgot your password and cannot receive a verification code, first check the account recovery process in the FAQ to avoid repeated attempts triggering risk controls.

2. Four common reasons notifications do not sound

iPhone's notification mechanism is relatively strict. If Potato messages are delayed or there is no prompt at all, the issue is usually at the system level. Open "Settings" - "Notifications" - "Potato," confirm that the "Allow Notifications" switch is on, and check "Lock Screen," "Notification Center," and "Banners." If only Banners is enabled, you will not see any alerts on the lock screen.

The second easily overlooked point is Focus mode. Check "Settings" - "Focus" and see whether Potato is included in the allowed list for scenarios such as Work, Sleep, and Personal. Many people keep Work mode on during the day and then find that all messages pile up at night; this is the reason.

Third, Background App Refresh must be on: keep "Settings" - "General" - "Background App Refresh" - "Potato" enabled. If it is off, the app will no longer actively fetch messages after it goes to the background.

Fourth, Low Power Mode limits background activity. When battery is below 20%, delayed notifications are normal. If all of the above are normal, try uninstalling, reinstalling, and logging in again. This step can solve most notification abnormalities. For more permission details, check against the Privacy and Permissions page.

3. Actual behavior of multi-device sync

Potato supports logging into the same account simultaneously on iPhone, iPad, and desktop. The sync logic is: new messages are pushed to all online devices, but the loading speed of historical chat records depends on each device's local cache. After logging in on a new phone, old conversations may need anywhere from a few minutes to several tens of minutes to be gradually filled in. The specific duration depends on chat volume and network quality; it is not a one-time full download.

A few practical suggestions:

  1. Keep the network stable during sync. Do not frequently switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  2. Save important files on the old device to the "Files" app or Photos first to avoid re-downloading after switching devices.
  3. If a device shows "Syncing" for a long time, log out of that device and scan the code again.
  4. When too many devices are online at the same time, some devices will be pushed offline. This is normal behavior.

It should be noted that multi-device sync depends on account login status. After logging out, the local cache will be cleared. Before switching devices, it is recommended to manually back up important content.

4. Channels, bots, and daily use

After setup is complete, you can try subscribing to a few channels or using bots for automatic reminders. In bot configuration, you can set keyword replies and scheduled pushes, which are suitable for personal to-dos or group management. For specific command formats and permission settings, refer to the Bot Usage Tutorial, which includes step-by-step examples for beginners.

If you are still unsure whether to install it, or want to understand the differences between system versions, you can first read the App Download and Installation Instructions to confirm device compatibility before proceeding. Once you go through the entire setup process, most issues can be identified on your own, and there is no need to repeatedly reinstall.
